The nation's first indoor canine water park attracts guests to the Harrisburg Pet Resort – KELOLAND.com

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Many people in the Sioux Falls area know the drive down Minnesota Avenue to visit the Country Apple Orchard each fall. Now there's another major attraction across the street that offers year-round entertainment for man's best friend.

"This is the only indoor dog water park in the country," said owner Teri Jo Olean.

The Splash Bark is part of the multi-million dollar expansion of the Smoken Dakota Kennels that was held at their South Minnesota Avenue pet resort last year.

"The addition was added in January 2020 and we opened on February 1, 2020," said Olean.

They had about six weeks of business in the new double-size facility before the pandemic started.

"We had a good run and then a good goal and of course we didn't have many visitors during that period," said Olean. "That was pretty scary, but I had confidence, I knew it would come back, I knew the concept was solid and it was something unique in the country."

Now, a year later, their tropical indoor dog oasis and the tiki bar for adults …

“We have our license for malt beverages. We sell a variety of beers and seltzer, ”said Olean.
… Attract a lot of visitors.

"We had a girl who had traveled from Missouri a few weeks ago and we went on a day trip with her dog," said Olean. "We had a girl from Nebraska recently and a family from Chicago last week."

Business is booming not only in the Splash Bark, but also in the expanded Pet Resort.

"Our day care program exploded after Covid. We don't have enough space for all the inquiries we have." Lots of people had puppies during the Covid period, so we're seeing lots of new customers, especially in our daycare and training department, ”said Olean.

“You never have to worry about your dog when you bring him here, they are so happy to get in and play with their friends. If he comes out at night he's happy to go home, ”says Joe Bernhard, Doggy Daycare customer said.

Bernhard and his dog Zander are frequent SDK South customers who both love the unique vision of this South Dakota entrepreneur.

"Couldn't even imagine it a few years ago, but now that it is here, just enjoy it. You run and play and splash around, just like children in a hotel park," said Bernhard.

This is the second SDK location in the Sioux Falls area. It started 14 years ago with a boarding and training facility near Wild Water West. You bought the Harrisburg site four years ago, and it continues to grow rapidly.
